Beryllium is used as first wall material in JET and is planned to be used in ITER. To reduce the surface heat flux, nitrogen is proposed as a candidate for radiative cooling. Due to elevated temperatures and ion bombardment, mixed materials are formed from Beryllium and nitrogen. The formed compounds have significantly different chemical and physical properties than the pure materials. In my talk, I will at first demonstrate the experimental possibilities of the XPS setup in Jülich. Then, I will present some preliminary results on the phase formation of Be3N2 and give you an outlook to planned experiments on the system Be-N.
