The Physics Laboratory Ionic and Molecular Interactions ( PIIM ) is a joint research unit between CNRS and Aix -Marseille University (UMR 7345 ) . PIIM is in the PACA region , quite a unique place where you can make fundamental physics experiments and develop models at the forefront of research in physics dilute media . This UMR includes physicists and physical chemists studying dilute media such as gases and plasmas, and interactions of these environments with matter. Research teams that make up the laboratory register , each with a different weight, the three axes that are atomic physics and radiation, plasma physics , and the reactivity of surfaces. Therefore our research focuses on several disciplines naturally we want to continue to associate to develop an original basic research and quality.

Our laboratory has experienced strong growth since 2006 its means equipment , thanks to the aid of communities and funding several ANR , especially those who are driven by the laboratory. Funded in 2008, the ANR TADOTI ( dynamics and thermodynamics of trapped ions) , is an interdisciplinary project that combines the fundamental physical properties of atomic Coulomb systems. Copy in our UMR , it allows new collaborations between atomic physics, the radiation -matter interaction , and fundamental physics of plasmas.

NRAs CAMITER (carbon and other materials for ITER) , PHOTONITER ( spectroscopic study and control of magnetized plasmas ) , the " finalized" with the PACA region FORMICAT (formation and migration of carbon in tokamaks ) provided a set of means study ( over one million euro funding ) for the study of plasma-wall interaction , but also for the spectroscopic characterization of edge plasma of tokamaks . It is remarkable that these projects are developed in close synergy between experiments and models such as the quantum properties of particles on surfaces, or radiative properties of plasmas.

Our partnership with other ANR has helped other topics such as the study of nanoparticles in plasmas or turbulent transport in fusion devices . This last theme has taken on an international dimension in our laboratory with the creation of the International Associated Laboratory France -Japan on modeling and simulation of turbulent transport in ITER plasmas .

The application of our research on controlled thermonuclear fusion is clearly an important axis of the laboratory. It will focus in tokamaks , with a well-developed program with the European EURATOM and CEA together , and of course with the ITER international organization whose machine is being built on the site of Cadarache. Note that we also participate in other fusion research because we are members of the Plasma Laser Institute , and we work with the reversed field pinch of Padua. We participate actively in the Federation Research Magnetic Confinement Fusion , with 12 projects funded in 2008, on the subject of the interaction of hot plasma with the walls , control of turbulent plasma must be confined in the heart of these machines, and atomic physics and plasma diagnostics .

Motivités initially by a demand for better facilities for the development of our UMR , we proposed in 2006 a contract for project - state region that provides for the restructuring of a building on the campus of Saint Jerome. With a title search on the center of Fusion Science , the building must accommodate UMR PIIM but also dependent PIIM structures and enabling collaboration on academic themes upstream research requested by the ITER project . The university currently offers to create an international institute of sciences of the merger, which must accommodate for long stays of international scientists interested in the thematic upstream of the merger.

It is the expertise gained in these projects that allow us to participate in many activities that promote within clusters as CAPENERGIE on the theme of non -generating energy greenhouse gas emissions, PHOTONICS on the topics of advanced laser and the study of radiation in plasmas, and also Carnot STAR which has 10 laboratories marseille north institute. It is also in this context, and that the merger of Marseille universities we discuss the formation of a collegium of Applied Science .
