Fusion Research in India and India’s Contribution to ITER

Abstract :
Magnetically confined hot and dense plasmas offer a route to fusion energy via controlled thermonuclear reactions between deuterium and tritium nuclei. However, to achieve the temperatures and densities of interest, there is a need to carry out extensive experiments and modeling on hydrogen-plasmas so as to understand the deeper physics of energy transport and confinement regimes. Institute for Plasma Research in India has been carrying out a number of studies in the areas of fundamental research, basic plasma, tokamak physics and industrial applications. In Dec. 2005, India joined the ITER Project. This talk gives an overview of the programs at IPR, the two tokamaks – ADITYA and SST-1 and the fusion technology programs. ITER contribution from India is broadly classified into 9 packages, ranging from precision to heavy manufacturing, advanced control systems and R&D. The packages are at various stages in design, manufacturing and shipping, depending on ITER priorities. Apart from this, a few technology development programs were launched, viz. the breeding blanket. The talk captures highlights of progress on ITER deliverables and the fusion technology activities on the domestic front. A few points will be made with respect to challenges that are likely to be encountered in next step machines on the path of realization of fusion energy.
