The main idea behind the creation of AMU-PSI is to decipher the complexity of plasma – wall interactions (PWI). Indeed, PWI involve a complex state of matter, the plasma, which contains numerous species such as (molecular) ions (e.g. D3+, D2+, D+), atomic radicals (e.g. D0) and (hot) molecules (e.g. D2*). AMU-PSI has been designed such that independent control of all these separated species is possible and up to two type of species can interact simultaneously with a material, being its surface, its bulk or both.

The AMU-PSI setup has been designed to :
-  allow the in situ preparation and characterization of materials with clean and chemically well controlled surfaces,
-  perform materials surface exposure and/or bulk implantation with various neutral (MB), radical (HAS) and ionic beams (IB),
-  perform high precision desorption kinetic measurements thanks to the heating rate variations method in Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD) on the sample temperature range 120 K - 2300 K,
-  perform abstraction kinetic measurements with multiplexed mass spectrometry

AMU-PSI is a true surface science apparatus with a state-of-the-art TPD setup and crystallographic and surface chemical analysis tools (LEED and AES, respectively).

It is fully operational since the summer 2018. Look at the computer screen on the picture above to see the first application of our new supersonic molecular beam : measuring the absolute sticking probability of molecule on a metallic surface with the King & Wells technique.
